Gloria Charles

  • Originally trained as an R.N. in St. Vincent & the Grenadines, West Indies (1968-1971).
  • Immigrated to Montreal, Canada in 1971 and worked at the Montreal General Hospital for 3yrs before relocating to Hamilton, Ontario.
  • Gloria worked at St. Joseph’s Healthcare for 27 years in a full-time position and 3 years part-time. Areas of interest are: Cardiac, Respiratory and Geriatrics.
  • In 2008 she Co-tutored in the N4H03: Issues in International and Intercultural Health and from 2009 to present, a Clinical Tutor for N4JO7, Students in International Clinical placements.
  • Also associated with students and faculty in the Undergraduate program from the University of the West Indies in Trinidad, during 2008 and 2010.
  • Since becoming a member of the Faculty of the School of Nursing at McMaster, Gloria has taught levels 1, 2 & 3 PBL, 4TH year Clinical and the Accelerated Stream level 3 PBL.

  • Masters thesis related to culturally diverse student nurses and their qualitative experiences within a nursing program.

Faculty Profile

Professor Mujica, recipient of the 2011 McMaster Students Union Teaching Award, has been involved in Global Health educational activities for several years. As current co-chair of the Global Health Education committee, she has participated in the revisions and development of the Introduction to Global Health Issues course (4H03), the establishment of affiliation agreements and the selection and training of students planning to have a Global Health placement. She has international experience in South America (Peru and Chile), locally (Toronto-Canada) and has been a PBL consultant to faculty members from Chile (Temuco, Santiago), Mexico (Colima, San Luis Potosi), Israel, Italy, North Dakota –USA and South Africa.

Professor Mujica is a member of the Canadian Society of International Health (CSIH), the Global Health Education Consortium (GHEC), the Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research (CCGHR) and the McMaster Global Health Research leadership program. Her global health research interests include Global Health Education (intra and interdisciplinary), transcultural care and impact of Global health experiences on professional practice


Marianne Paul

Education:
Marianne completed a Masters Thesis at McMaster University with a focus on the gendered knowledge of HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia. She is currently involved in a cross-collaborative study assessing the health demographics of Haitians in Port-Au-Prince Haiti.

Global Health Interests:
HIV/AIDS and Gender, Emergency medicine in low resource settings and strengthening nursing development in low-income countries.

Jodi has worked in various fields of nursing including public health, acute pediatrics (medical, surgical & emergency), critical care, community care, rural and remote and primary health care in Canada, Australia, Africa and the United States.

Jodi completed a 5-month mission with Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors without Borders (MSF) in Southern Sudan as an Outreach Nurse.  She collaborated with 20 other international MSF staff and over 100 local National MSF workers within the outreach and base sites to deliver primary health care in remote areas.   She hopes to do another mission in the future.

Local and regional historical and cultural determinants of health; understanding current health issues in relational to historical patterns in epidemiology of health and social problems.
