The Leadership and Management Program presents a unique opportunity to engage in learning with a focus in healthcare leadership. As health care continues to undergo systems change, nurses and other health care professional are seeking leadership and management education that supports them in both formal and informal leadership roles in their workplace.
The Program, which continues to be endorsed by the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA), is designed for nurses and other health care professionals and is offered by distance education both nationally and internationally. As well the courses are offered in tutorial format at McMaster University and health care organizations across Ontario. The Program has partnered with health care organizations to:
- Provide education to current and future leaders
- Develop leadership capacity
- Be an integral component of succession planning for clinical and front line leadership roles
The Program offers six courses. These courses focus on leadership and management, team effectiveness, conflict management, and quality management. Students successfully completing individual courses are awarded McMaster University undergraduate credit.
Throughout the curriculum the concept of leadership is approached from both clinical and business perspectives, reflecting both the CNA’s and the Canadian College of Health Service Executives’ position on leadership
The concepts and theories presented in the curriculum are supported with opportunities to apply these to the practice setting. This opportunity for application results in a more experiential understanding of the role of leadership and management in the health care system.
